Case Study

Design Brief

Create 3D models and manufacturing drawings for stainless steel transition pieces. Also provide dwg files of flat patterns of shapes for laser cutting.

The final design of the transition pieces had to have the following characteristics.

  • Be made from 3mm stainless steel
  • Designs to incorporate sheet metal sections
  • Welding of sheet metal components to be kept to a minimum
  • Fillet on all sharp corners to avoid risk of injury
  • Dimensions to match dimensions provided by our customer
  • Manufacturing Drawings to be easy to follow with all parts labelled and easily identifiable.
  • All necessary information to be included on the drawings
    • Material Type and Grade
    • Surface Finishes
    • Weld Details
    • Fold Details
    • Quantity of individual components required to make up the fully assembled part.
    • Any other necessary information

Part 1 – Design

The first part of this project was to create the 3D models of the components, we would then use these 3D models to create the manufacturing drawings for each component.

Part 2 – Manufacturing Drawings

Once we had completed the design and 3D modelling of the components we then proceeded to create the manufacturing drawings. All information necessary for the manufacturing of the completed parts was presented on the drawings.

We then exported the flat pattern of all components as dwg or dxf files for easy import into our clients nesting software for their laser machine
